Fitzroy will have a new sports centre in 2024. In response to the demand for more and better facilities in built-up inner-city areas, this vertically integrated Fitzroy Sporting Centre will be the first of its kind in Australia.

As the project's Consulting Building Surveyor, our primary role is to realise and maintain the architect's design intentions while ensuring the complex nature of the building and its many requirements – fire safety and access, essential safety measures, compliance and due diligence - are achieved.

The vertical design of the centre includes five indoor multi-purpose courts (stacked over three floors), a 24-hour gymnasium, storage and change rooms, a cafe and lounge area, plus community facilities.

As the first of its kind in Australia, the need for innovation and practical, efficient solutions becomes more apparent. The high-profile nature of the project does little to manage the inherent complexity. However, Krneta’s early engagement means all parties involved will achieve their goals.

While the Krneta team takes charge of all regulatory matters, providing vital assistance to the designers and contractors in their mission to complete this ground-breaking development, we are also working closely with renowned designers, CO-OP Studio and head contractor Built Environs. With their respective specialities in social infrastructure and their ability to deliver complex projects across many sectors, we could not have asked for more capable partners on this project.

"It's exciting to see work underway at the Fitzroy Gasworks Sports Centre – providing an important health and wellbeing community space for locals," says the Minister for Transport Jacinta Allen.

Eventually, the whole Gasworks precinct will be developed and become home to 1000 families. Facilities like this will provide room for a range of local sports clubs, including the Collingwood Basketball Association, but also act as an important central hub for a new community.

"Council has been a long-term advocate for this project, and it's great to see works beginning," said Yarra City Council Mayor Cr Sophie Wade.

The centre is a considerable addition to the fabric of the inner city - a $54.5 million project - that requires attention to detail and a multitude of compliance and safety solutions to call this project complete.

"This is an excellent opportunity for Krneta to showcase our full range of building consulting skills. Infrastructure projects like this allow us to demonstrate our full range of capabilities on the biggest stage, and it's a challenge we relish," says our Associate, Baris Sahin.
